(1817-1894). James Buttersworth specialized in maritime art and considered the foremost American ship portraitist of the 19th century. He was born in 1817 in London to a family of maritime artists and studied painting with his father, Thomas Buttersworth. He moved to the United States in 1845 and lived in West Hoboken, New Jersey and had a studio in Brooklyn, New York. His paintings are found in many museums as well as in private collections thoroughout the world. |
