(1850-1921). Antonio Jacobsen was born November 2, 1850 in Copenhagen. He was the son of a violin maker. Although he was expected to follow his father's footsteps, Antonio chose art instead and studied at the Royal Academy in Copenhagen. His studies were interrupted by the Franco-Prussian War. To avoid conscription he came to America in 1871. In New York City he found work decorating iron safes. While so employed, he painted the vessels of the Old Dominion Steamship Line and began his life work as specialist in steamer portraits.
